GaLaBau 2004 – Winners of the Landscape Gardener Cups

Yesterday on the building site, the next day at the Landscape Gardeners' Cup: In 2004, Alexander Bitzer and his team colleague Andreas Wandinger won the Landscape Gardeners' Cup at the GaLaBau trade fair.

At the time, both men were employed by the Thalmeier company of the Verband Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau Bayern e. V. and were helping out at the State Garden Show in Burghausen when they were asked to stand in for another team at short notice. Their boss was impressed by their cooperation and suggested that they take part in the cup together.

They didn't have time to prepare. So, they jumped in from one day to the next and won first place.

What was the task at the time?

The real challenge came with the implementation of the competition task. The Cup took place in a hall at the Nuremberg exhibition center, which was of course very exciting and new for both of them. They were only used to working outdoors, where things are much more rustic.

They had to design a house entrance on an area of 4 × 4 meters within 14 hours. This included working with basalt paving, slate steps, slate slabs, a slate wall, wooden planks, a foil pool, and planting. Working with the slate was particularly challenging, as they had never worked with this material before.

What has become of the winner Alexander Bitzer

Alexander Bitzer has now been running the company Bitzer & Bernhard GmbH for 12 years together with another former colleague, Stefan Bernhard. Both completed their training in the same company – a team for life.

They have specialized in high-quality projects, such as pools, swimming ponds and public facilities, and have also made “training” their main focus. They now employ 30 people.

The Landscaping Cup was an important motivational boost for Alexander Bitzer's professional development and boosted his self-confidence. Since then, Alexander Bitzer has not regretted for a second that he chose landscaping. He appeals to future participants in the Cup: “Taking part in the Landscape Gardening Cup is a unique opportunity. Trainees can boost their self-confidence and improve their concentration. Especially working in front of an audience, which is not easy for everyone, helps a lot in later life. Many private customers like to look over your shoulder. Take advantage of the opportunity and persevere”.

He continues to visit the GaLaBau trade fair regularly, especially when it comes to the Landscape Gardeners' Cup. He is also involved in the master craftsman examination committee to promote young talents. He appreciates the opportunity to make and maintain contacts and to follow current industry topics.
