Our TERRAM geocells made from permeable geotextile fabric are a cost-effective solution to protect the roots of urban greenery. They are an alternative to traditional construction methods that are invasive and costly. Tree roots can be protected permanently and sustainably by the load distributing honey-comb structure. This way invasive construction that can cause damages to the roots can be fully avoided, making infrastructure improvements environmentally conscious.
Because of this, the TERRAM geocells are a part of the initiative “GRÜN BLAUER PFAD” hosted by the GaLaBau 2024.
Advantages:
- Environmentally friendly with low impact on nature
- Low installation height
- Protection of tree roots
- Seal-free after water-permeable superstructure, sustainable due to high durability of the material, for long-lasting function and stabilization of the soil
- Various different filling materials possible
- Economical – few materials needed and quick installation
- Low costs of transport
- Easy installation
To ensure optimal tree protection, the honey comb structure needs to be stretched across the area. In the next step, they need to be filled with suitable filling material to be compressed. The vertical loads on the geocells, in conjunction with the friction between the filling material and the cell wall, generate horizontal soil stresses. The stretching of the cell walls creates ring tensile stresses that increase the stiffness of the fill compared to the unstabilized soil. This distributes the pressure load over the entire surface of the root bridge and thus reduces the load on the root system.
This means that the vertical stresses (pressure loads) are distributed over a large area of the honeycomb surface and the vertical deformations are significantly reduced. This effect means that the flat base layer structure with TERRAM geocells achieves just as high a level of soil reinforcement as the classic substructure with a high structural thickness and high material requirements. The root bridges can be used to create particularly stable cycle paths and roads without major construction work and without restricting the root space.
Tree protection with geocells reduce:
- Intervention of nature due to avoiding invasive construction methods
- Construction time
- Material costs
- Construction costs
Various applications:
- Walkways and bike paths
- Emergency roads
- Parks or parking lots
- Road construction
