Cement-free mineral binders replace cement in concrete
Cement production is one of the largest sources of CO₂ in the construction industry. To counteract this, Rinn developed the climate stone. As a pioneer of sustainability in the industry, after an intensive period of research and development, the company has succeeded in completely eliminating the use of cement as a binder in the so-called core concrete of the stone and replacing it with cement-free mineral binders. Only the approx. 1 cm thick facing concrete – the “design layer” responsible for the look and feel of the stone – remains unchanged. This means that the Klimastein contains around 90% less cement. CO₂ emissions in production are reduced by 65%.
The climate stone conserves resources and is ecologically compatible
Due to its environmentally friendly properties, the climate stone can bear the renowned “Blue Angel” environmental label. Like all Blue Angel products from Rinn, the Klimastein is climate-neutral in its entire life cycle. The stone also contains 25% recycled content and the stone itself is 100% recyclable.
Climate stones meet all current standards
In order to investigate the performance of the climate blocks, Rinn commissioned MaterialsPerformance59 GmbH to carry out a broad test program at the Institute for Materials in Construction (WiB) at the Technical University of Darmstadt (TUDa). In addition to tests on the mechanical properties of the paving stones, analyzes on their durability were also carried out. These were in particular tests on water absorption and freeze-thaw salt resistance (FTW). The result was full compliance with the current standard for concrete paving stones.
References speak for the climate stone
Some building projects now demonstrate the use of Rinn Klimastein as an alternative. The climate stone is particularly popular in private home gardens. More and more customers want products that have the lowest possible ecological footprint and no negative environmental impact. There is also a great desire for eco-paving stones for unsealed areas.
In total, Rinn delivered around 48,000 m² of Klimastein products in 2023. Due to the expansion of the range, the delivery quantities will increase significantly. From January to June 2024, Rinn has already sold around 47,000 m² of paving stones in the almost cement-free version; Of these, around 32,000 m² are for private home gardens alone. This clearly shows that Klimastein products are in demand among consumers.
Four paving systems, two surfaces for sustainable home gardens
Four paving systems are available for the home garden area in two different surfaces, color or rinnit, and several colors: Lukano KlimaPlus, Lukano smart KlimaPlus, the water-permeable paving Hydropor Lukano KlimaPlus and Passee KlimaPlus. In addition to these systems, Rinn offers object-related production with a larger range of colors for public spaces. The climate stone is laid, cut and stored in a conventional manner and weighs about the same as stones with cement content.
